Baking

Baking, by far, is the easiest tradeskill to skill up and allows you to make Misty Thicket Picnics which are a great “stat food” that sell well in the bazaar (prices vary by server but average 3-6PP each considering a cost of a few gold each).  Baking also allows you to make many “fun” items that are cheap but are always in demand.  Your beginner shopping list should include:

  • A spit (many merchants sell these or you can get a collapsible from a tinkerer)
  • A mixing bowl (many merchant sell these or you can get a collapsible from a tinkerer)

Important note:  if you class or race can forage you should spam the forage key or set up a macro – foraging can be extremely helpful to bakers.  When you start getting alternate advancement skills you should consider purchasing that skill also (adds 50 points to the maximum to anyone who can forage, or anyone else will be able to forage to skill 50). Note:  it is recommended you get your smithing and pottery skills up to 50 (you can see those guides separately) so you can make some needed components like pie tins and cake rounds.  Yes, I say work on those two later on and I’m sure you’re asking “why are you saying do those two first here but not in the guide?” It’s simple, you only need to get these to 50 each for pie tins and cake rounds.  Dairy spoons trivial at 74 but at a level of 50 you should be able to succeed in a combine or two.  The guide is how to get all tradeskills to 300 and the best way to do it. Here is the best way to get your baking skill to 300:

  • Alternate Start (if you’re bored and want to work on fishing, too)
    • 1 lb saltwater crab meat  and 1 lb saltwater tuna- varying yields, trivial at 16
      • Fish in the Abysmal sea – you will get crabs and tunas of varying weight.  If you combine one of these in a mixing bowl you will get 1 item for each pound (in other words, a 5 pound saltwater tuna will yield 5 1 lb saltwater tuna).
  • Batwing crunchies – trivial at 46
    • 1 bat wing + 1 frosting in a spit or oven
    • Sell the crunchies and leftover frosting, keep the bat wings
  • Fish fillets – trivial at 82
    • 1 fish + 1 jug of sauces in a spit or oven
    • Keep all extra fish, sell any extra sauce and the fillets
  • Alternate stepping stone:
    • Apricot marmalade – trivial at 99
      • 1 fruit (common foraged item)+ 3 frosting in a spit of oven (yields 6)
      • Save them for Misty Ticket Picnics
  • Fish rolls – trivial at 135
    • 1 bat wing + 1 fish
    • Sell or use the rolls, sell the extra fish, keep the bat wings
  • Bat wing pie – trivial at 142
    • Obtain basilisk eggs (best yield for clumps of dough) – either from merchants, in the bazaar, or by killing basilisks in Lavastorm
    • Obtain a pie tin (commonly sold in the bazaar or can be smithed (trivial at 35) or made though pottery (trivial at 115)
    • Make the bat wing pies in a spit or oven:
      • 1 clump of dough (1 basilisk egg + 1 milk + 1 cup of  flour in a mixing bowl (trivial at 16 – yields 15 clumps)
      • 1 bat wing
      • 1 spices
      • 1 pie tin (you get this back if you succeed or fail)
    • Keep all leftover clumps of dough
  • Alternate route 1:
    • Filleted bear – trivial at 143
      • Obtain a filleting knife (either in the bazaar or smithed – trivial at 76)
      • Either buy bear meat that other players sold to merchants or at a merchant in Thurgadin or Shadowhaven)
      • 1 bear meat + filleting knife in a spit or oven
      • Keep the fillets for the next step
      • Keep extra bear meat for later
    • Bear Fillet in Cream – trivial at 152
      • Make creamy fennel sauce (Cream, cup of flower, fennel) in a mixing bowl – trivial 75
      • Combine the creamy fennel sauce with filleted bear in a spit or oven
      • Save them if you plan to make Halas 10lb meat pies (not covered in this document but they are trivial at 226)
  • Jumjum Cake – trivial at 166
    • As with the bat wing pies, get many basilisk eggs for clumps of dough
    • Get a cake round (commonly sold in the bazaar or can be smithed (trivial at 38) or though pottery (trivial at 115).
    • Get brownie parts (either purchased in the bazaar or hunted from brownies in Lesser Faydark
      • Common brownies and brownie farmers are level 15
      • brownie guards and nobles are around level 35
      • Make winter chocolate (trivial at 95):
        • 1 brownie parts + 2 frosting in a mixing bowl, yields 1
    • Get stalks of Jumjum (sold in Rivervale and Shadow Haven) can also be foraged and a ground spawn in Rivervale
    • Get Frosting (commonly sold)
    • Make the jumjum cake in a spit or oven (yields 20 (yes, an entire stack):
      • 1 clump of dough + 1 jumjum stalk + 1 cake round (returned on success and failure) + 1 winter chocolate + 1 frosting
    • Save the cakes for Misty Thicket Picnics – you can sell them to a merchant or in the bazaar if you feel you have a lot of them (or give them to friends)
  • Patty Melt – trivial at 191
    • Get bear, lion, and wolf meat (players often sell these on merchants in newbie zones and Melet Ironstove (PoK – eastern trader building) sells lion and bear meat)
    • Get cheese
    • Get a non-stick frying pan (sometimes sold in the bazaar or made with smithing, trivial at 91)
    • Get a loaf of bread (sold on merchants – don’t make it)
    • Make the patty melt in a spit or oven:
      • 1 meat + 1 cheese + 1 loaf of bread+ 1 non-stick frying pan (returned on success and failure)
  • Alternate “stepping-stones”
    • Normally now I’d suggest making Misty Thicket picnics but their trivial is over 300 so at 191 you will have a lot of failures and your trophy may not evolve properly.  Here are some suggestions but only worry about getting your skill between 235 and 240:
    • Jaggedpine Stir Fry – trivial at 244
      • Vegetables (common forage) + 2 plant shoots (foraged or dropped in Jaggedpine) + non-stick frying pan in a spit or oven
  • Misty Thicket Picnic – trivial at 335
    • This recipe will get you to 300.
    • WARNING:  subcombines have HIGH YIELDS.  Do not over-stack on base components!
      • It is also recommended to have two extraplanar trade satchels for this due to all the subcombines and high yields.
      • I personally recommend having 3 stacks of each component (6 stacks of junjun cake slices since you need two).  The sandwiches have a yield of 12 so 5 combines will give 60 or 3 stacks.
    • Make Picnic Baskets (in a sewing kit, yields 10, trivial at 76:
      • Woven mandrake: 2 mandrake root in a sewing kit (trivial at 66)
      • Steel Boning  (water flask + small brick of ore + file (returned on success and failure) in a forge (trivial 37)
    • Make Jumjum spiced beer
      • Water Flask + Spices  + Bottle (returned on failure) + jumjum stalk + barley + hops in a brew barrel (yields 10, trivial at 162)
    • Make Mature Cheese
      • 2 bottles of milk + 1 dairy spoon (water flask, 2 metal bits, scalar mold in a forge – trivial at 74) + rennet in a mixing bowl (yields 10, trivial at 84)
    • Make slices of jumjum cake
      • 1 jumjum cake in an oven (yields 10, trivial at 27)
    • Make royal mints
      • 1 eucalyptus leaf + 1 frosting in a mixing bowl (yields 10, trivial at 76)
    • Make jumjum salad
      • 1 fennel + 1 jumjum stalk  + 1 vegetables + 1 lettuce in a mixing bowl (yields 10, trivial at 142)
    • Make a marmalade sandwich
      • Make apricot marmalade
        • 1 fruit (foraged) + 3 frosting in a spit or oven – (yields 6, trivial at 99)
      • 1 loaf of bread + 1 apricot marmalade in a mixing bowl (yields 12, trivial at 99)
    • 1 marmalade sandwich + 1 jumjum salad + 1 royal mints + 2 slices of jumjum cake + 1 mature cheese + 1 picnic basket + 1 jumjum spiced beer in an oven (not a spit – yields 6, trivial at 335)
